I voted today. Here in Nebraska there is a little drama with the congressional race pitting the incumbent Lee Terry against a current state legistlator, Tom White. Terry has gotten a lot of flack from Tea Party types for his TARP vote at the end of 2008. He was present at the April 15, 2009 Tea Party rally in downtown Omaha, and while people were respectful as he worked the crowd, there wasn’t much enthusiasm for him. When his vote for TARP was mentioned, in fact, he was booed.
Tom White has run as a fiscal conservative, anti-Washington, common-sense Nebraskan. In a year other than this one he may well have been able to win, but it seems unlikely liberal downtown Omaha will overcome the rest of Douglas County that is in the district. It would be interesting to know how much the current chaos in City Hall will influence voting today. A big-spending mayor who appears to be in the pocket of public-sector unions is facing a recall petition drive. That’s not going to help a candidate hoping to go to Washington, D.C. and caucus with the Democrats.
